You may not have noticed, but as you travel along the M56 towards Chester there is a hill on the left of the motorway with a funny outline.

My children thought it looked like the outline of a man’s head. We made a few enquiries and were told it was the form of the ‘sleeping giant’.

Apparently, many years ago there was a huge dragon killing people and animals all over the north of England. Everyone was very frightened of the dragon because nobody could think how to stop it. Every time anybody went to speak to the dragon he breathed on them and turned them into a burnt cinder, a bit like a sausage on a barbecue.

Luckily, the giant travelled the world looking for gold and treasure and was an expert at slaying dragons. He was so big he could jump from one country to another, over seas and oceans.

He was travelling through Cheshire one day when a rich man offered him as much gold as he could carry if he killed the dragon. He fought the dragon near Ince Banks, where the oil refinery is now. The dragon scorched his feet and made him hopping mad but the giant managed to stab him in the chest and made all the fuel for his fiery breath leak out. (that could explain the oil refinery!!!)

Once the dragon had lost its fiery breath it didn’t want to fight any more and ran off back to Wales. The giant’s feet were hot and sweaty from running after the dragon and he decided to bathe his feet in the river Mersey. The rich man gave him his gold and he put it in his pockets.

The giant felt very tired. He rested his head on Dunham on the Hill and had a nap and, being a giant, everything about him was bigger than normal so his nap lasted for 6 months.

Now, at this time there was a very, very cold winter and as the giant slept he was frozen to death. He never woke up from the position in which he fell asleep.

As the years went by trees and grass grew over his face and they built the motorway where his belt used to be.

We have not been able to find out the name of this giant, but we hope that some of the parents who live in this area will be able to tell us the rest of the story, including the giant’s name. Perhaps you live near Dunham on the Hill, perhaps your dad is a rich man, perhaps you know where to go to get in the giants pockets! But, would you be brave enough?

If you can help please write your story and hand it in to a member of staff or you could email it to info@funstations.co.uk
